Scoliosis

Scoliosis is a condition that results in deformity of the spine. It can be brought on by other conditions such as muscular dystrophy, cerebral palsy, and birth defects, but has no known cause in the majority of cases. The majority of scoliosis cases occur in adolescents from ages 10-18 (80%) but scoliosis can occur in infants and children as well. While there appear to be connections between heredity and scoliosis, further research is needed to determine if it can be identified genetically.

Scoliosis occurs when the spine rotates in a way that curves the spine sideways. The most common scoliosis often causes the spine to curve to the right, forming what looks like a backwards “C” shape. This curvature can occur in different areas of the upper and/or lower back. In more extreme cases, scoliosis can result in a double or even triple curve of the spine. Severity of scoliosis is mainly dependent on the angle of the spine curvature. And contrary to popular belief, scoliosis cannot be caused by poor posture, heavy backpacks, or playing sports, as it’s cause is often a mystery.

While scoliosis itself is generally painless, it can cause painful complications. Scoliosis results in poor posture which can lead to neck and back pain. It causes trunk imbalance and increases the likelihood of recurring muscle spasms. In more severe cases, extreme spine curvature can even affect the chest and lungs.

If you or someone you know are experiencing poor posture or any abnormal spine curvature, do not hesitate to seek medical consultation. At Orthopedic Spine Care of Long Island, our doctors will use the latest radiographic technology to determine if you may have scoliosis, the severity of the condition, and how far along the spinal curvature has developed. From there, they will determine the most efficient way to treat your specific condition. Treatment options are dependent upon the severity of your scoliosis case, but more mild scoliosis may require recurring observation while more serious cases may require a back brace or surgery, such as spinal fusion to correct spinal curvature. Our highly experienced doctors, who possess extensive backgrounds in orthopedic spinal surgery, will carefully determine what specific treatment plan will be the most effective for you.
